occupation

The film The Last Battle is a semi-documentary work that deals with the end times of the Third Reich from April 20 to May 2, 1945.

action

The " docudrama " takes place in a time frame of 13 days, the setting is Berlin . The dictator spends his last days in the Führerbunker , while the battle for Berlin rages on the streets of the destroyed city .

The film consists of interviews with contemporary witnesses and film scenes based on their experiences. It shows individual fates on both the German and Russian sides, for example the story of a young German nurse who takes care of seriously wounded soldiers, or that of a radio announcer who remains in his radio bunker until the end. A German Jew who fled his home country is now returning as a lieutenant in the Red Army and accompanying a Soviet general who, despite the war, is particularly concerned with the welfare of the German civilian population. In total, almost a dozen individual fates are recreated.

background

The film was made on the 60th anniversary of the capitulation of the German Reich. The film was made on behalf of ZDF in collaboration with Arte . Guido Knopp was in charge of editorial management .

criticism

“At first glance, the technology is reminiscent of other historical films monitored by Knopp. But Blumenberg, who has already illuminated the format of the docu-drama in its creative possibilities with " Deutschlandspiel " or "Der Aufstand", narrates in a more sophisticated way. From the fictitiously condensed eyewitness surveys (50 were interviewed in total, at the end of 130 hours of material) a polyphonic panorama of times that is particularly revealing in its contradictions develops. The viewer is usually challenged, not lathered. "
