The funny women of Windsor is an Austrian opera adaptation based on the eponymous model by Otto Nicolai (music) and William Shakespeare (content). Directed by Georg Tressler .

Sir John Falstaff is quite a Filou. The notoriously clammy ladyboy and drunkard sent an identical love letter to two women. One of them, Mistress Ford, decides, together with Mrs. Reich, to teach him an apprenticeship. Mistress Ford then invites Falstaff to a rendezvous in her house, while the other sends a letter to Mr. Ford to inform him about Falstaff's tête-à-tête with his wife.

It happens as it has to: Ford and Herr Reich appear at the most unfavorable moment for Falstaff and their actions cause hopeless confusion. Falstaff's dissolute intentions are thwarted and bring the notorious do-no-good into extreme distress. In the end, the humiliated Falstaff is cured of his tendency to constant, amorous escapades, and by the way, Mrs. Reich's daughter Ann has found her great love in the pretty, albeit poor, Fenton.

Production notes

The funny women of Windsor was filmed in Vienna from June to August 1964 . The world premiere took place on March 6, 1965 in Vienna; in Germany, the work started on March 15, 1968.

Gerd Krauss took care of the equipment, Hans Nowotny, Elfriede Mitterhuemer and Helga Pinnow designed the costumes. Rosella Hightower was responsible for the choreography and dance . The production management was in the hands of Robert Russ.

His sense of comedy comes to the fore here, albeit slowed down by the slow pace that the musical structure inevitably brought with it.
