Diego Matheuz

Diego Matheuz (born August 9, 1984 in Barquisimeto , Lara State , Venezuela ) is a Venezuelan conductor and violinist .

Career as a conductor

Matheuz was brought up as part of the Venezuelan policy of early musical education in the countryside ( El Sistema ). He first learned the violin in his hometown and from 2005 completed courses in conducting with the founder of the system, José Antonio Abreu . In 2006 he already worked alongside Claudio Abbado at various concerts in Italy and Venezuela. Sir Simon Rattle invited him in July 2007 to conduct the Orquesta Sinfónica de la Juventud Venezolana Simón Bolívar , Venezuela's Simón Bolívar Youth Symphony Orchestra. In 2008 he made his debut in Italy as conductor of the Orchestra Mozart from Bologna and conducted the Casals Festival in San Juan in Puerto Rico . The Orchestra Mozart then invited him to conduct the opening concerts of the 2009 and 2010 seasons. With Claudio Abbado he was deputy conductor at concerts in Caracas and Bologna.

In 2009 Matheuz was a guest conductor at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome , at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari and at the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI in Turin . Recently he conducted the final concert of the Accademia Gustav Mahler in Bozen in South Tyrol and made his debut at the Festspielhaus St. Pölten in Lower Austria with the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Lower Austria . As deputy conductor, he worked with Gustavo Dudamel both with the Simón Bolívar Youth Symphony Orchestra on their recent tours and with the Swedish Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra .

Matheuz conducted in November 2010, the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan at a concert in the Konzerthaus Berlin in Berlin , the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra in Frankfurt am Main and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London . Since 2011 he has been chief conductor at the Teatro la Fenice in Venice , where he conducted the New Year's concerts in 2012 and 2014 .

Career as a violinist

Matheuz is one of the first violinists of the Simón Bolívar Youth Symphony Orchestra, and has also performed as a soloist with the orchestras of the Venezuelan states of Miranda and Lara, the Young Strings of Venezuela and with the Chamber Orchestra of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He continues to study violin at the Academia violinistica Latino-Americana under José Francisco del Castillo .
