Dieter Blume (born June 29, 1920 in Kassel ; † January 6, 2004 in Gladenbach ) was a German teacher and ornithologist .

Life

Dieter Blume did his Abitur at the Friedrich- Gymnasium in Kassel. He began a study of psychology and medicine in Göttingen . He had to give up because of being drafted into the Wehrmacht . During the battle of Stalingrad he was wounded in the foot and in January 1943 he was flown out of the local pocket on one of the last flights. Because of this foot injury, he was disabled from walking all his life. After the war he went to the Pedagogical Institute in Weilburg and studied to be a teacher. He was in several places in the Hessian hinterlandused as a teacher until 1953. From 1953 until his retirement in 1981 he was employed as a teacher at the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Schule in Gladenbach, also in the Hessian hinterland. He conducted numerous courses for the Hessian Institute for Teacher Training. From 1975, the biology teacher was co-author of the series of textbooks Das Leben from Ernst Klett Verlag . He spent the last years of his life in a nursing home.

Ornithologist and local historian

As a hobby ornithologist, Dieter Blume was one of the woodpecker experts in Europe. The ornithological standard works Handbuch der Vögel Mitteleuropas and Handbook of the Birds of Europe, the Mittle East and North Africa often refer to flowers in their volumes, which deal with the woodpeckers. The Handbook cites 27 of Blume's works. Collaboration on the volumes on the woodpeckers of the encyclopedia of the birds of the world and Grzimek's animal life . He wrote at least 44 ornithological articles. The 1961 Supplement Volume in the Journal of Ornithology , entitled About the Way of Life of Some Species of Woodpecker , was written by Blume. He wrote the woodpecker books Die Buntspechte (4th editions), Schwarzspecht, Grauspecht, Grünspecht (5th editions) and The Spechte Fremdländer (2nd editions). Also the ornithological books How Birds Behave , Expressions of Our Birds: An Ethological Guide (4th Edition) and Birds Everywhere . The book This is how the birds behave was translated into Dutch as Zo dobile zich vogels . He was a co-founder of the Hesse Avifaunistic Working Group. In the obituary, Prof. Karl-Heinz Berck describes him as one of the two most important Hessian ornithologists after the Second World War.

He also wrote numerous local history works and worked on local chronicles. In particular, he wrote the book Gladenbach und Schloß Blankenstein in 1987 . For many years he was honorary director of the Gladenbach City Library.

In the 1960s and 1970s he was a member of the church council of the Evangelical Congregation in Gladenbach and the dean's synod there.

In 1983, Blume received the Dr. Leineweber Prize from the city of Gladenbach for his cultural activities. On May 29, 1990 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his life's work and the Otto Ubbelohde Prize of the Marburg-Biedenkopf district for his work in local history and monument preservation.
