Youth and education
After the expulsion in 1946, the family came to a village south of Bremen. He then studied electrical engineering at RWTH Aachen University with a degree in engineering (1962). After twelve years in industry, he became a Dr.-Ing. PhD .

After ten years as a development engineer in the Philips Group in Germany and the Netherlands, he became head of department in the automotive test technology division of Robert Bosch GmbH in 1973 . In this function, he was also a member of the directorate of the EU project EUREKA 95 for the development and introduction of high definition television in Europe, which after a technically successful completion was no longer used due to the departure of Great Britain.
Genealogy and cultural-historical research
At the same time his interests in genealogy and Silesian local history developed, which began in 1973 with the research of his ancestors in Niederschwedeldorf in the county of Glatz (since 1945 Szalejów Dolny ). From 1981 he began with the comprehensive task of ascertaining all the remaining German church registers of the County of Glatz (approx. 1300 copies), which were not only in the parishes there, but also in the Wroclaw State Archives ( Archiwum Państwowe we Wrocławiu ) and in the Archbishopric Diocesan Archives in Wroclaw ( Archiwum Archdiecezjalne we Wrocławiu ) are available. As a result, he brought the volume The Church Books of County Glatz 1996 to print.
In 1986 he founded the genealogically oriented research group Grafschaft Glatz (FGG), which he headed until 2001. In 2001 he founded the working group Grafschaft Glatz - Culture and History (AGG), which is culturally and ecclesiastically oriented, and its annual conferences were held in Münster. After his 80th birthday, Pohl handed over the management of the AGG on 26/27. April 2014 to Klaus Huebner. At the time, the group had more than 60 members, including nine active or retired professors. Under Pohl's leadership, the AGG published thirteen issues of the AGG-Mitteilungen from 2002 to 2014; since issue 14 (2015) Prof. Dr. Klaus Huebner, Mettmann, the publication.
He also published the local chronicles of the Lewin pastor Joseph Kögler (5 volumes), wrote a bibliography and more than 50 cultural-historical works on the County of Glatz and thus made a significant contribution to the preservation of its cultural heritage.
