Dieter Schiller (Germanist)

Dieter Schiller (* 1933 in Eisenach ) is a German literary scholar and Germanist .

Life

Dieter Schiller was born in 1933 in Eisenach (Thuringia), studied from 1951 to 1955 at the Humboldt University in Berlin (East) German and worked there from 1955 to 1965 as an assistant and senior assistant in the field of modern German literature, especially German literature 1770 until 1830. At the same time, critical texts on contemporary literature were written .

In 1965 he moved to the Institute for German Language and Literature of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin, later the Academy of Sciences of the GDR , as research group and department head for German literature in the 20th century. After founding the Central Institute for the History of Literature, he mainly worked as a research group leader for German literature in exile and as deputy director of the institute (1976/80 and 1986/90). He received his doctorate in 1965, completed his habilitation in 1973 and was appointed professor at the academy in the same year.

From 1977 to 1990 he headed the editorial board of the literature service published by the Central Institute .

As co-editor and co-author he was at the Lexicon of Socialist German Literature (lead: Silvia Schlenstedt, Halle / Saale 1963) and at the Lexicon of Socialist Literature (lead: Simone Barck, Stuttgart 1994) as well as on the history of German literature from its beginnings to the present , Volumes 6 to 10 (edited by Hans-Günther Thalheim, Berlin: Volk und Wissen Volkseigener Verlag 1973–1979) involved. In 1978 he prepared an international colloquium on “German literature in international anti-fascist resistance” on behalf of the institute and was co-author of volume 7 on art and literature in anti-fascist exile (director: Werner Mittenzwei, Verlag Philipp Reclam jun. Leipzig 1981).

From 1975 to 1990 he headed the Johannes R. Becher Central Working Group in the Kulturbund of the GDR and, together with Hans-Peter Klausnitzer, edited the newsletter efforts .

He researches and publishes on German literature in the 20th century, his specialties are German literature in exile 1933–1945 and German socialist literature.

Dieter Schiller lives as a private scholar in Berlin. He has been married to the Germanist Leonore Krenzlin since 1979 .
