Dieter Schumann (* 22. June 1953 in Ludwigslust ) is a German documentary - director , writer and producer of Mecklenburg .

Life

Dieter Schumann grew up in Ludwigslust, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ( GDR ).

Schumann went to sea at the age of seventeen and later studied directing at the Babelsberg Film University . Since 1983 he has worked as a director for cinema and television.

He became known through the rock report whispering & screaming , which offers insights into the underground music scene of the GDR. It was shown in the GDR cinemas in 1988 and was a novelty there, as it realistically portrayed the contradictory worlds of the time before the reunification. The film made the alternative music of the GDR known outside its borders and received international recognition. Schumann's films are particularly characterized by their close proximity to the everyday life of their protagonists.

From 1990 onwards, Schumann built up the cultural film funding and the State Film Center Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and in 1991 was the founding director of FILMKUNSTFEST MV . Until 2001 he acted as the director of the State Film Center, and from 2002 he returned to full artistic work.

The film Wadan's World - From the dignity of work to the decline of Wismar's Waden shipyard has received numerous awards. In doing so, however, the weekly newspaper Die Zeit accused him of glorifying circumstances instead of looking for causes.

In addition, Prime Minister Erwin Sellering awarded him the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Culture Prize for his services to the film and cultural landscape in the north.

In 2020 Schumann will take over the co-management of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Film Fund.

Trivia

Schumann received honorary citizenship of the city of New Orleans for his work whispering & shouting .
