Live and act

Dietfried Jorke studied from 1946 to 1951 medicine at the universities of Greifswald and Jena and graduated at the latter in 1952 to Dr. med. on the use of urethane as a drug to treat leukemia . From 1953 Jorke worked at the Jena University Hospital. There he completed his specialist training for internal medicine and worked as a scientific assistant and ward doctor. In 1961 he completed his habilitation at the University of Jena on lymphoid cells in the blood and was appointed medical director of the city hospital the following year. As a result of his teaching activities there, he was appointed adjunct professor for internal medicine at the University of Jena in 1966. In 1972 he completed his habilitation in Jena as Dr. sc. med. and initially worked at the university as an honorary professor , from 1975 as a full professor.

In the 1970s, he was the head of the clinic 's development staff , and was instrumental in building the new clinic for internal medicine (KIM) in Jena-Neulobeda , and was appointed one of the directors when it opened in 1980. The first university oncology department for the systematic chemotherapy of solid tumors was established at this clinic under the direction of Dietfried Jorke and Klaus Ruffert.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Jorke, who was one of the driving forces behind the democratization process at the university, co-founded the Academy for Medical Training and Continuing Education in Thuringia, where in the early years he took over the management and development. At the university he was head of the “Action Group for the Democratic Renewal of the University” (ADEH) and thus ensured that key positions at the university were filled after the GDR era. On September 12, 1991, at the suggestion of the SPD, CDU and FDP parliamentary groups in the Thuringian state parliament, he was elected regional returning officer .

In February 1993, Jorke resigned from his public office. His later publications dealt with death, terminal care and medical ethics , as well as with the history of internal medicine in Jena.

Dietfried Jorke died in December 2019 at the age of 93.
