Dietmar Steiner

Dietmar M. Steiner (born December 31, 1951 in Wels , Upper Austria ; † May 15, 2020 in Vienna ) was an Austrian architecture journalist , architecture historian and critic . From 1993 to 2016 he was director of the Architekturzentrum Wien .

Life

Dietmar Steiner studied architecture with Ernst Plischke and Gustav Peichl at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and in 1973 at the EAP master school. He worked for Friedrich Achleitner's archive “Austrian Architecture in the 20th Century”, and later with Rob Krier . From 1980 to 1982 Steiner was Secretary General of the Austrian Society for Architecture. Until the opening of his own architectural consultancy office in 1989, he taught at the chair for the history and theory of architecture at what was then the University of Applied Arts Vienna . From 1995 to 1999 he was editor for architecture of the international design magazine Domus in Milan, from 1993 managing director of the Architekturzentrum Wien (Az W).

Since 1997 he has been a member of the Advisory Committee of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award. In 2002 he succeeded Hans Hollein as commissioner for the Austrian pavilion at the 8th Venice Architecture Biennale. In 2004 the City of Vienna awarded him the Silver Medal for Services to the State of Vienna . In 2006 he was elected President of the International Confederation of Architecture Museums / ICAM.

Steiner published numerous articles on the criticism and theory of the city and architecture as well as on building culture in Austrian and foreign media.

At the end of 2016 he retired as director of the Architekturzentrum Wien. Angelika Fitz succeeded him in this position.

Steiner died on May 15, 2020 as a result of heart surgery.
