Dietrich Ballehr

Dietrich Ballehr (* 1873 in Vegesack ; † 1959 ) was a German ship's captain and an expert in dealing with the sinking of the Pamir .

Life

Ballehr grew up in Bremen . After completing school at the Bremen secondary school, he went to the barque Brema as a cabin boy at the age of 16 . As a sailor , he completed the prescribed sailing time on the ships of the North German Lloyd (NDL), attended the navigation school in Geestemünde with the completion of the captain's test on a long voyage . After completing his service as a one-year-old in the Imperial Navy , he took over the position of navigational officer on the Lensahn , the yacht of the Grand Duke of Oldenburg . Intermediate stops on the express steamers Kaiser Wilhelm II and Crown Princess Cecilie alternated with exercises with the Imperial Navy in Kiel , which he left as a reserve officer. In the meantime he worked for more than ten months on Lloyd's Chinese coastal voyage from Hong Kong . In 1908 he became first officer on the Grand Duchess Elisabeth, today's Duchesse Anne, and from 1911 captain on the sailing training ship Herzogin Sophie Charlotte , in 1913 captain on the Duchess Cecilie , the then only sailing training ship of the NDL, which he moved from there in 1920 after a war-related layover in Chile to Ostend , Belgium and finally handed over to France in 1921 .

After the unexpectedly quick rebuilding of the Lloyd fleet after the First World War , Ballehr led Lloyd passenger ships to South America until his retirement .

After his retirement he became involved in the international brotherhood of Cap Horniers , of which he was President d'honneur for a time . In connection with the sinking of the Pamir southwest of the Azores, he was also available to the Maritime Administration in Lübeck as an expert in the investigation of the incident.

Furthermore, after the Second World War , he devoted himself to building up the Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People .
