Dietrich Ellger (born March 30, 1922 in Wiednitz ; † October 18, 2007 in Münster ) was a German art historian and monument conservator .

Career

After graduation in 1940 at the high school Augustinum in Görlitz Ellger began in Berlin art history, classical archeology study and history. He was only able to resume his studies in Kiel in 1948, which was interrupted by military service and the war . After receiving his doctorate in 1951 with a thesis on the building history of the Marienkirche in Lübeck , Ellger worked at the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments in Schleswig-Holstein , from 1956 as head of inventory and from 1969 also as deputy to the state curator Hartwig Beseler . From January 1, 1972, until his retirement on March 31, 1987, Ellger was the successor to Hermann Busenthe monument office of the regional association Westphalia-Lippe . He responded to the new challenges to the preservation of monuments by setting up a department for technical cultural monuments and a comprehensive rapid inventory.

In 1975 Ellger was appointed honorary professor at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster and in 1976 was the first monument conservator to be elected chairman of the Association of German Art Historians for four years . Since 1980 Ellger has been a full member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia since 1988 .

On the question of the reconstruction of lost monuments, Ellger took a balanced position at the annual meeting of the Association of State Monument Preservators in Münster in 1980, which on the one hand referred to their fundamental problems, but on the other hand emphasized the legitimacy of the procedure when "later ... the undiminished realization of one consider the old invention to be more valuable than the immediate witnesses of the subsequent change ”. One result of his efforts in this regard was the rebuilding of the lost baroque altar of the Paderborn Jesuit Church .
