Semaphore, at Pointe Jardeheu

Digulleville is a village and a former French commune with 259 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Manche department in the Normandy region . It belonged to the Arrondissement of Cherbourg and the Canton of La Hague . The inhabitants call themselves Digullevillais .

With effect from January 1, 2017, the previous municipality of Digullevill was merged with the other 18 municipalities of the former Communauté de communes de la Hague to form a Commune nouvelle with the name La Hague and has the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative headquarters are in Beaumont-Hague.

geography

Digulleville is located on the English Channel coast on the Cotentin peninsula , in the La Hague landscape , in the Armorican massif . The village consists of a single street (Rue Désert) and scattered hamlets. Adjacent parishes were Omonville-la-Rogue in the east, Beaumont-Hague in the south, Herqueville in the southwest, and Omonville-la-Petite in the west.

Digulleville is derived from the Gaelic first name Decuil and the ending -ville ( farm ).

It is also found in the former place name Digulstonga in Iceland .

history

The human presence in Digulleville is old. The presence of tumuli and the discovery of bronze coins bear witness to a Celtic settlement before the Roman invasion.

Sites

  • Several pit-shaped hearths from around 4700 BC were discovered next to Pointe Jardeheu .
  • The hamlet of Raumarais is home to two sites that date back to the early Middle Neolithic . The finds (pottery, small scrapers made of flint) suggest a probably seasonal stopover for hunting and fishing.
  • Excavations in the bay of La Gravette have revealed hearths from the Iron Age.

economy

The controversial La Hague reprocessing plant is located on part of Digulleville . The Center de Stockage de la Manche is adjacent to the recycling plant . The industrial zone is operated by the Chambre de commerce et d'industrie de Cherbourg-Cotentin . About 30 companies are based there.

Attractions

  • Boscq manor; Douville Manor.
  • Saint-Paterne Church, Romanesque church from the 13th century. The church is dedicated to Saint-Paterne, formerly Bishop of Avranches .
  • Semaphore of Jardeheu at Pointe Jardeheu. Today it is no longer a semaphore, but a gîte (accommodation for visitors).
  • Hague-Dick , a Bronze Age rampart designed to secure access to the Cape of La Hague; it was added to the list of historical monuments on May 10, 1988.
  • La Brasserie waterfall on the Sainte-Hélène river, which supplies the hamlet of La Brasserie with water.

  • Bon Prosper Lepesqueur (* 1846 in Digulleville, † 1921), real name Polidor , marine draftsman in Cherbourg . He has written many songs in Norman ( Le Cordounyi , La Batterie de Serasin , Le Chendryi , La Parcie , Le Fisset ).
