Dimitar Panajotow Grekow ( Bulgarian : Димитър Панайотов Греков) (born September 14, 1847 in Bolhrad ( Ukraine ); †  May 7, 1901 in Sofia ) was a Bulgarian politician and Prime Minister .

biography

Studies and professional career

After school education in Bessarabia , he completed a law degree in Aix-en-Provence , which he graduated in 1875. He then worked as a lawyer in Brăila .

After Bulgaria's (limited) independence from the Ottoman Empire on May 13, 1879, he became President of the Supreme Court in Sofia . He held this office until July 5, 1879.

His son Aleksandar Grekow was a diplomat during the First World War .

MP and Minister

Also after independence, he began his political career in 1879 with the election of MPs, where he initially represented the interests of the Conservative Party (Консервативната партия) until 1883 . Grekow was one of the authors of the first constitution passed on April 16, 1879, the so-called Constitution of Tarnowo .

On July 17, 1879, he was appointed by Conservative Prime Minister Todor Burmow as the first Minister of Justice of independent Bulgaria and held this office until April 7, 1880. From December 6 to 11, 1879, he was also Minister of the Interior . From July 5, 1882 to March 15, 1883, he was again a member of Leonid Sobolev's cabinet as Minister of Justice . From September 9 to December 25, 1883, he was also President of the National Assembly.

He later became a member of the People's Liberal Party (Bulgarian Народнолибералната партия ) and was elected as such from 1887 to 1894 and from 1899 to 1900 in turn as a member of the National Assembly.

On November 14, 1890, Prime Minister Stefan Stambolow appointed him Foreign Minister and Minister of Religion. He held these offices until the end of Stambolows term on May 31, 1894. From October 2, 1891 to February 25, 1892 he was also Minister of Justice again.

Party chairman and Prime Minister 1899

After Stambolov's death and Dimitar Petkow's transition period of only one year , he was elected chairman of the National Liberal Party in 1896. After his death, Petkov was re-elected chairman.

On January 30, 1899, Prince Ferdinand I finally appointed him Prime Minister himself . After a short and insignificant term in office, however, he was dismissed from this office on October 13, 1899. During his tenure he was also Minister for Foreign Affairs and Religion.
