Dipropylene glycol methyl ether is usually a complex mixture of isomers from the group of glycol ethers .

Extraction and presentation

DPM is obtained as a mixture of isomers by reacting propylene oxide with a mixture of 1-methoxy-2-propanol (boiling point 120 ° C.) and 2-methoxy-1-propanol (boiling point 130 ° C.). With 90% 1- (2-methoxy-1-methylethoxy) -2-propanol (CAS no. 20324-32-7) and 1- (2-methoxypropoxy) -2-propanol (CAS no. 13429) dominate -07-7) - both stereoisomeric mixtures.

Secondary isomers are 2- (2-methoxypropoxy) -1-propanol (CAS No. 13588-28-8) and 2- (2-methoxy-1-methylethoxy) -1-propanol (CAS No. 55956-21-3 ) - both also stereoisomeric mixtures.

In 2000, the US produced around 16,000 tons. This makes it one of the chemical substances that are produced in large quantities (" High Production Volume Chemical ", HPVC) and for which the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) collects data on possible dangers (" Screening Information Dataset ", SIDS).

use

DPM is used as a solvent for printing inks, thinners and finishing agents in conjunction with methoxypropanol in paints and as a solvent in household chemicals and cosmetics.

safety instructions

It slowly forms peroxides in air and has an ignition temperature of 205 ° C just above the boiling point. The vapors of DPM can only form an explosive mixture with air when it is strongly heated ( flash point 79 ° C, ignition temperature 205 ° C). It is therefore classified as "non-explosive". The compound has very low acute toxicity, is readily biodegradable, and has little potential for bioaccumulation. DPM is not one of the environmentally hazardous substances.
