Dirk Hempel (born September 12, 1973 in Jena ; † August 19, 2017 ) was a German football player .

Athletic career

The offensive midfielder , who went through all the youth teams at FC Carl Zeiss Jena and then matured into an important part of the FCC reserve team in the Thuringia regional league and, from 1994, in the fourth-class northeast league , briefly moved back to the second division squad in the 1995/96 season the Jenaer on. In two home games against Fortuna Köln and VfL Wolfsburg , Hempel was used in the second highest division of German football . As early as August 1994, he made his debut as a substitute for Bernd Schneider on the 2nd matchday of the 1994/95 season of the Regionalliga against Hertha Zehlendorf in the 1st team of FC Carl Zeiss, which was promoted at the end of the season.

The native of Jena did not make it into the regular team of the licensed team at his hometown club and in the summer of 1996 the Thuringian moved to Saxony for FC Erzgebirge Aue . In the third-class regional league he was one of the most important kickers of the Auer team and scored twelve goals in 58 league games within two years. After the Jenaers were relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga , Hempel returned to his hometown and in the following five years, with more than 150 league appearances, was a permanent member of the traditional Thuringian club in the regional league and, from 2001, in the major league . The midfielder, who died in August 2017, later ended his footballing career at VfB Pößneck , FC Erfurt Nord and FSV Hettstedt .
