description

As a biotope network of semi- arid lawns with bushes and forest areas in dry and warm locations as well as with the adjacent areas with the character of orchards , the Distelberg is a habitat for numerous rare and protected species of native flora and fauna .

The field name Distelberg already indicates the typical vegetation of the numerous specimens of the many species of thistle. The numerous stemless scraped thistle and the golden thistle must be mentioned here .

In spring blooming on the Distelberg numerous violets and primroses . Some time later, the numerous fruit tree blossoms in the neighboring gardens as well as the blossoms of the privet , hawthorn , blackthorn and various wild rose species spread their scent over the mountain into the valley.

In the further course of the year, the flowers of the numerous orchids can be seen on the meadow areas and in the adjacent gardens, the purple orchid and the helmet orchid , the large two-leaf orchid , the fly orchid and the bee orchid . In the forests such as the Bauernholz and the Hirschgrund, the white forest bird and the nest avot bloom . In the flower calendar of the Thistle Mountain, the linden blossoms follow in the woods and from the head linden on the Thistle Mountain . The fragrant flowers of the fragrant honeysuckle can be found in the adjacent hedges, and meadow sage and other meadow flowers with their flowers in various colors on the meadow . This large selection of flowers in turn attracts a variety of butterfly species, which are also found in large numbers on the Thistle Mountain.

A picturesque, gushing description of the Distelberg from childhood and youth memories of the poet and children's book author Adolf Holst (1867–1945), who was born in Branderoda and spent his childhood, fits this . Quote: "From the highest height of the beloved Thistle Mountain, where it already passed into the plateau of the wide harvest fields, the seven mighty linden trees, the far-sighted guardians of the village in the valley, wasted their intoxicating scents of flowers over the slopes and up into the blue sky, and thousands of butterflies of every kind and color hovered and fluttered individually and in twos and threes from flower to flower, or they billowed up and down the mountain meadow in a cloud of confusing color and drank the sweetness of summer from calyxes: the swallowtail and the sail butterfly , the peacock's eye , the admiral , the mourning cloak and the fox , plus the small people of the bluebirds and mother-of-pearl butterflies in the cheerful crowd. Nowhere else have I seen such an abundance gathered together as in the corridors of my home in gardens, meadows and forests! "

In late summer and autumn the gentian plants, the centaury , the German gentian and the fringed gentian bloom . As annual plants, these gentian plants are dependent on loosely open vegetation areas for their continued existence. The grazing cattle on the Distelberg, such as sheep , goats and donkeys , favor the development of a so-called turf society with many small areas with open soil surface between the remaining grasses and meadow herbs by grazing the areas and with their hooves. Furthermore, the grazing livestock prevented in a sporadic sparse grazing by the browsing the encroachment of the open meadows. Through the bushes, the growth of trees and shrubs, the open meadow areas would develop over time into closed shrubbery areas and then into even higher closed forest areas, with significantly lower numbers of species and individuals.
