The Junín District is located in the Junín Province in the Junín Region in central Peru . The district has an area of 870 km². The 2017 census counted 10,976 residents. In 1993 the population was 16,643, in 2007 12,088. The seat of the district administration is the provincial capital Junín with 9755 inhabitants (as of 2017) at an altitude of 4107 m near the south bank of the Junín Lake .
Geographical location
The Junín District is located in the south of the Junín Province. The district is located in the Andean highlands on the western flank of the Peruvian Central Cordillera on the southeastern shore of Lake Junín. The lake and the lakeshore are within the Junín National Reserve .
The Junín district borders in the northwest on the Ondores district , in the north on the Carhuamayo district , in the east on the Ulcumayo and San Pedro de Cajas districts , in the south on the La Unión and Paccha districts and in the west on the Marcapomacocha and Santa Bárbara de districts Carhuacayán .
