The Ulcumayo District is located in the Junín Province in the Junín Region in central Peru . The district was established on October 26, 1926. It has an area of ​​1011 km². The 2017 census counted 4425 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 9877, in 2007 it was 7142. The seat of the district administration is the village Ulcumayo with 680 inhabitants located at an altitude of 3600  m near the north - eastern shore of Lake Junín . Ulcumayo is 25 km northeast of the provincial capital Junín .

Geographical location

The Ulcumayo District is located in the northeast of the Junín Province. The district extends across the Peruvian Central Cordillera . The longitudinal extent in the WSW-ONE direction is about 63 km, the maximum width is 26 km. The Río Paucartambo runs along the eastern northern border in an easterly direction. The Río Ulcumayo (in the lower reaches also Río Oxabamba) flows through the southwest of the district and then runs along the southern district boundary in an easterly direction.

The Ulcumayo district borders in the west with the districts Junín and Carhuamayo , in the north with the district Paucartambo ( province Pasco ), in the northeast with the districts Chontabamba and Oxapampa (both in the province Oxapampa ) and in the south with the districts Huasihuasi and San Pedro de Cajas (both in Tarma Province ).
