The Chontabamba district is located in the Oxapampa Province in the Pasco administrative region in Peru . The district was established on November 27, 1944. It has an area of ​​450 km². The 2017 census counted 5637 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2460, in 2007 it was 3189. The seat of the district administration is the 1900  m high village Chontabamba with 1223 inhabitants (as of 2017). Chontabamba is located on the Río Huancabamba (in the upper reaches also Río Chontabamba) about 5 km southwest of the provincial capital Oxapampa .

Geographical location

The Chontabamba district is located on the eastern flank of the Peruvian Central Cordillera . The Río Paucartambo flows east along the southern district boundary. Its left tributary Río Pusapno drains the south of the district. The north of the district is traversed by the Río Huancabamba, the right source of the Río Pozuzo , in an easterly direction.

The Chontabamba district borders in the extreme southwest on the Paucartambo district , in the west on the Huachón district (both districts are in the Pasco province ), in the north on the Huancabamba district , in the east on the Oxapampa district and in the south on the Ulcumayo ( Junín province) ).
