The Huancabamba district is located in the Oxapampa Province in the Pasco administrative region in Peru . The district was established on November 27, 1944. It has an area of 1237 km². The 2017 census counted 6891 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 5746, in 2007 it was 6333. The seat of the district administration is the 1666 m high village of Huancabamba with 1018 inhabitants (as of 2017). Huancabamba is located on the Río Huancabamba 21 km north-northwest of the provincial capital Oxapampa .
Geographical location
The Huancabamba district is located on the northeast flank of the Peruvian Central Cordillera in the southwest of the Oxapampa province. The Cordillera Huaguruncho mountain range runs along the southwestern border of the district . The Río Huancabamba drains together with its left tributary Río Huaylamayo the area to the north. The Cordillera Yanachaga ridge stretches along the eastern district boundary .
The district of Huancabamba borders in the northwest with the district Pozuzo , in the northeast with the district Palcazú , in the southeast with the district Oxapampa , in the central south with the district Chontabamba and in the southwest with the district Huachón ( province Pasco ).
