Network scheme of the Doha Metro (phase 1)

The Doha Metro (project name: Doha Metro ) is a rail-bound local transport system under construction in the Qatari capital Doha . In 2019, part of the red and green lines opened.

The Qatar Railway Authority, Qatar Rail , has awarded the operation and maintenance of the Doha Metro, as well as the Lusail light rail , to RKH Qitarat for 20 years. RKH Qitarat is a consortium of the Hamad Group (51%) and the internationally operating French transport groups Keolis and RATP Dev (49%).

Concept study

Inspired by the corresponding metro systems in the neighboring Gulf cities in the United Arab Emirates , the Dubai metro , which is already in motion, and the Abu Dhabi metro, which is in the planning stage , the Qatari Ministry of Transport conducted a feasibility study to determine whether a metro would also make sense for Doha.

The key data clearly spoke in favor of such a system: the settlement area, which is expanding further and further north on the coast through urbanization projects such as Lusail City , while at the same time continuing settlement densification in the hinterland, will grow to a Doha settlement cluster of at least 1 million inhabitants by 2020.

The first ideas of the concept study were to build a metro with a total of 85 kilometers in length; of which a route along the east coast to the north, a high-speed route to, among other things, Doha Airport , a goods transport route for the commercial zones and a route of a more S-Bahn-like light rail system. Above all, the Doha metro is intended to connect the widely spaced suburbs of Doha and new development areas such as Lusail, Education City and West Bay.

Role as a building block in the Qatar rail project

According to the latest plans, the Doha Metro is an integrated part of the overall rail plan for Qatar. DB International , a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn AG , was commissioned to develop a rail system for freight and passenger traffic for the peninsula. It is planned to connect Qatar to the rail network of Saudi Arabia in the south and a high-speed connection via the pier planned to the west to Bahrain . In the more densely populated areas in the Doha area, there should be developments in the area. The integrated system thus consists of around 350 kilometers of long-distance routes, including freight traffic, and a further 300 kilometers of S-Bahn (Light Rail System) routes in the more densely populated region, 85 kilometers of which are metro routes, some in tunnels in the Doha metropolitan area. After the FIFA World Cup 2022 has been awarded to Qatar, the Doha metro and the light railway system will be of particular importance, as each of the twelve World Cup stadiums will have a rail connection.

Project progress

In July 2011, the Ministry of Transport put the first phase of the $ 150 billion Qatar riyal metro project out to tender. It comprises 22 kilometers of tunnels and 15 tunnel stations. 60 international consortia have applied for the contract. However, in October 2011 it was announced that the process would be delayed until the fourth quarter of 2012 in order to develop even more precise plans. The commissioning of the metro targeted by the client tended to take place in 2017, with a connection to the planned railway lines on the mainland as early as possible.

In 2013, contracts for the design and construction of the Doha Metro were awarded with a total value of $ 30 billion Qatari riyals:

At the beginning of 2014 the contract for the construction of the southern section of the Red Line was awarded as well as an order for project monitoring.

At the end of April 2014, the contract for the construction of the Golden Line was awarded to a joint venture led by Aktor (a company in the Ellaktor Group from Greece).

In February 2015, a consortium led by Mitsubishi was commissioned with the planning, delivery and implementation of the track construction, the system technology and the 75 trains, as well as with 20 years of maintenance of the system. The driverless metro system went into operation in October 2019 [obsolete] .

Route network

The first phase of the Doha Metro route network should be completed in 2019:

The route of the Golden Line (Golden / Historic Line) runs underground in an east-west direction between the Villagio Mall and the northern end of the runways at what is now Doha International Airport. The Green / Education Line begins in the west at Al Rayyan Stadium, runs first above ground and from the Dukhan Highway in the tunnel, past Education City to Msheireb Station. The route of the Red Line (Red Line / Coastal Line) connects the northern with the southern districts. It begins in Lusail City and runs on the surface to behind the site of the Qatar University, after which it passes under the central areas of Doha along the coast in a tunnel. It meets the other lines at Msheireb central station, then swings east to Al Matar Street. South of the runways of the current International Airport there is a branch to the new Hamad International Airport . The main branch of the Red Line passes the depot area after the branch at the surface and then ends north of Al Wakra.
