Domenico Bossi (born July 27, 1767 in Trieste , Italy , † November 7, 1853 in Munich ) was one of the greatest miniature portraitists of classicism . His works are painted on ivory in the tradition of Venetian miniature painting. However, they depict the respective model in an uncompromising realism that was unusual for its time .

Life

Domenico Bossi - son of the painter Bartolomeo Bossi and his wife Maria Ferrandini - completed his artistic training at the Academy of Venice under the direction of Giandomenico Tiepolo . It achieved great and extraordinarily international success in the late 1780s. Between 1789 and 1853, Bossi worked in numerous European cities such as Amsterdam , Paris , Berlin , Hamburg , Munich , Vienna , Stockholm and Saint Petersburg . He received prestigious commissions from the then ruling families from Prussia , the Netherlands , Mecklenburg-Schwerin , Sweden and Russia . In the course of his successful work he became a member of the art academies of Stockholm ( 1798 ) and Vienna ( 1818 ). In 1824 he was appointed "court painter" to the Swedish King Karl XIV.
