Domenico Rossetti was born on March 19, 1774 in the port city of Trieste, which was part of the Habsburg Monarchy at the time . Rossetti's father Antonio was a wealthy Trieste patrician and trader, whom Empress Maria Theresa raised to the nobility in 1775 and honored with the addition of de Scander to his name . After studying law in Vienna and Prato, Rossetti received his doctorate in Graz in 1800 . He then returned to his hometown of Trieste and opened a law firm.

During the occupation of Trieste by Napoléon from 1809 to 1813, Rossetti was a member of the Consiglio dei Patrizi . In 1818 Rossetti took over the office of procurator in the municipality of Trieste, which again belonged to Austria , which he held until 1842 and became increasingly politically active. In his function, Rossetti repeatedly represented the interests of his hometown before the Austrian government. Always respectful of the Viennese ministries, he was closely connected to Trieste and its traditions. Rossetti represented the idea of the Italianity of Trieste, but under the umbrella of the Habsburg monarchy and not as part of an Italian nation-state, as was the goal of the liberal national irredenta .

Rossetti died in Trieste on September 29, 1842. Most of his property was bequeathed to the city of Trieste.

On July 25, 1901 , a monument by Augusto Rivalta and Antonio Garella in honor of Rossetti was erected in the Gardino Pubblico Muzio de Tommasini city park in Trieste , where the busts of famous citizens of Trieste are displayed .

Promoter of art and culture

Rossetti's attachment to Trieste and his enthusiasm for Italian art and culture was also evident in his numerous cultural activities:

  • Founding of the Società di Minerva : On January 1st, 1810, he founded the Società di Minerva , a company that made it its business to cultivate art and literature as well as the history of the city of Trieste. Under the direction of Rossetti, the Società di Minerva founded the scientific journal Archeografo Triestino in 1829 and, with the help of the historian Pietro Kandler, published articles on Trieste's past at regular intervals.

  • Investigation of the murder of Johann J. Winckelmann : As early as 1808, Rossetti initiated a meticulous investigation into the murder of Johann Joachim Winckelmann , the founder of scientific archeology, 40 years ago , who was murdered by Francesco Arcangeli in Trieste . Rossetti's descriptions of Winckelmann's last week of life recalled his death, which had since been forgotten. His descriptions and his collection of the Trieste court records are now in print. Rossetti also commissioned the sculptor Antonio Bosa and his teacher Antonio Canova to design a monument in memory of Winckelmann, which was completed in 1822 and erected in 1833 in the cemetery of Trieste Cathedral , today's Lapidarium .
  • Lapidarium : In addition to the monument to Johann J. Winckelmann, numerous historical art treasures and antique memorabilia can be viewed in the Trieste lapidarium today, which were collected and displayed at the instigation of Rossetti.
  • Viale XX Settembre : In 1808 Rossetti had a footpath built at his own expense by the Trieste aqueduct, today's Viale XX Settembre .
