Donacaula niloticus is a butterfly from the family of Crambiden ( Crambidae ).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 14 to 32 millimeters (according to another source: males 17 to 20 millimeters; females 23 to 28 millimeters, in North Africa up to 35 millimeters). The labial palps are extremely long. Both sexes have pale ocher forewings. In the males, a dark brown line runs parallel to the outer edge of the wing from the costal edge to the middle of the wing. The forewings of the females have a white discal patch and the apex is not pointed. The species is very variable and the geographical populations are characterized by certain differences in habitus . Specimens with a brownish, longitudinal center line are called Forma nigrolineata .

The genital fittings of the males are similar to those of the other Donacaula species, but the subteguminal process is reduced.

In females, the corpus bursae is spherical. The ductus bursae is longer and slimmer and the ostium is more sclerotized than in Donacaula mucronella . The corpus bursae has a shape similar to that of D. niloticus .

distribution

Donacaula niloticus is widespread in southeastern Europe, where the species is found in Romania ( Dobrudscha , Năvodari ), Greece ( Thasos ; Skala Potamias, east coast; north of Skala Potamias), in southern Russia ( Taganrog ) and in Bulgaria (Kozuch bei Petritsch ).

Outside of Europe, the species is found in North Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Libya and Egypt). In the Middle East there is evidence from Israel, Turkey ( Kuşadası , Diyarbakır Province ), Cyprus , Georgia ( Lagodechi ), Uzbekistan ( Margʻilon ), Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan ( Oral ). Further to the east, the species is also native to Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia ( Hofuf ), northern India ( Faisalabad ), Turkmenistan (Tura) and China ( Gansu province ).

biology

The pre-imaginal stages of the species are unknown. Butterflies were caught in May and July.
