Donald Brun

Donald Brun (born October 30, 1909 in Basel , Switzerland ; † August 15, 1999 in Clarens ) was a Swiss commercial artist , designer , illustrator and photographer . He was best known for his poster designs .

Donald Brun did an apprenticeship as an "advertising draftsman" with Ernst Keizer (1894–1960; founding member of the Association of Swiss Graphic Artists ) from 1927 to 1930. Keizer was then a teacher of calligraphy in the graphics class at the general trade school in Basel and is considered one of the first Swiss professional graphic artists .

Donald Brun's first success as an artist was a poster competition held by the city of Basel in 1928 for a "bathing poster", which he won. From the 1930s until the 1970s, Brun created designs that made poster history. His work has attracted international attention. In 1964 he was invited to documenta III (in the graphics department) in Kassel .

Donald Brun co-founded the Alliance Graphique Internationale , AGI , in 1952 . His poster designs from the late 1940s and 1950s show Bauhaus influences . From an early age they are characterized by a subtle sense of humor. He worked for companies and brands such as Persil , Gauloises , Bell and Bata . He is considered one of the most successful Swiss graphic designers.
