Donald Kennedy
Donald Kennedy (born August 18, 1931 in New York City , New York , † April 21, 2020 in Redwood City , California ) was an American neurobiologist . He was President of Stanford University from 1980 to 1992 . He was also editor-in-chief of the science magazine Science .
Life
Donald Kennedy studied at Harvard University , from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Science . In 1956 he graduated with a PhD in biology with a dissertation on frog electroretinograms . From 1956 to 1960, Kennedy taught biology at Syracuse University .
In 1960 he moved to Stanford University as an assistant professor. In 1967 he was appointed chairman of the Institute of Biology at the Faculty of Humanities and Natural Sciences. He was instrumental in founding the human biology program. He also became involved in the Board of the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and was its director from 1973 to 1977. In the presidential of Jimmy Carter , he was appointed head of the 1977 Food and Drug Administration appointed (FDA) and the Authority initiated 26 months long.
In 1979 he returned to Stanford University and became their Provost . In 1980 he became President of Stanford University and served in this position until 1992. He then held the Bing Professorship for Environmental Sciences and Policy and was a retired and senior fellow of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies . Kennedy was considered an expert on environmental problems related to changes in land use, altered agriculture, and global warming .
From 2000, Kennedy was editor-in-chief of the prestigious journal Science , which is published weekly by the American Association for the Advancement of Science . He was also an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (since 1968), the National Academy of Sciences (since 1972), and the American Philosophical Society (since 1976).
Kennedy died in April 2020 at the age of 88 as a result of a SARS-CoV-2 infection.
