Donald L. Coburn

Donald L. Coburn (born August 4, 1938 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is an American playwright who was honored with the Pulitzer Prize for Theater in 1978 for his play The Gin Game .

Life

After attending school, Coburn did his military service in the US Air Force between 1958 and 1960 and founded his own advertising agency in 1965 , which he ran until 1968. After working as a copywriter at Stanford Advertising Company in Dallas , he worked from 1973 to 1976 as a marketing consultant.

For his play The Gin Game (see Gin Rummy ), which premiered in 1977 , he received the Pulitzer Prize for Theater in 1978 and was also nominated for the Tony Award for best play . The play has been staged several times as a television film , namely in 1981 by Terry Hughes with Jessica Tandy as 'Fonsia Dorsey' and Hume Cronyn as 'Weller Martin', in 1982 by Senne Rouffaer and Luc Segers under the title Kaarten op Tafel with Helene van Herck and Luc Philips , 1983 by Tom Toelle under the title Gin Romme with Edda Seippel and Klaus Schwarzkopf and in 2003 by Arvin Brown with Mary Tyler Moore and Dick Van Dyke . In German-language theater productions, Maria Nicklisch and Annemarie Schradiek played the role of 'Fonsia Dorsey' and Peter Lühr the 'Weller Martin'.
