Donald Lu (2010)

Donald Lu (* 1966 ) is an American diplomat . He has been the US ambassador for Kyrgyzstan in Bishkek since September 18, 2018 .

Professional career

Donald Lu comes from Huntington Beach , California as a child of emigrants - his father immigrated from China . He completed his undergraduate and graduate degrees in international relations from Princeton University in Princeton , New Jersey .

Between 1988 and 1990 Lu volunteered with the Peace Corps in Sierra Leone .

Between July 2009 and July 2010 he was acting US ambassador to Azerbaijan in Baku . Before that, the career diplomat was Deputy Ambassador to India , Kyrgyzstan and Azerbaijan. Then he was Deputy Head of the Ebola Fever Crisis in West Africa in the State Department .

On July 28, 2013, then US President Barack Obama announced that he would appoint Donald Lu as the 15th US Ambassador to Albania . Lu's official term began on December 17, 2014. On January 13, 2015, Lu arrived in Albania, succeeding Alexander Arvizu . In Tirana he had a strong influence on the country's domestic politics.

In May 2018, Lu was appointed Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan by Donald Trump . On October 12, 2018, he presented his credentials to President Sooronbai Dscheenbekow .

Private

Donald Lu is married to Ariel Ahart, a recognized expert in public health . The couple have two children, Kip and Aliya.

Thanks to his diplomatic and other international career, Lu speaks seven other languages in addition to English : Albanian , Azerbaijani , Georgian , Hindi , Krio , Russian and Urdu .
