history

Historical view of the town by Andreas Kieser, 1683

In ancient times, the Romans built a Roman fort, Clarenna , with its vicus about 500 m south of today's town . Roman wells were found near today's church and there was a Roman bathhouse east of Donnstetten.

In the Alemannic era, Donnstetten was probably re-established from Zainingen as an extension. The first known documentary mention names the place as Tunnesstate and dates from a record in the so-called Codex Laureshamensis of the Lorsch Monastery from the year 776.

During the Second World War, there was a hunter measuring point called Aesop-Y to the east of today's sports field . The remains are still visible today: You can still see a water reservoir that supplied the measuring position with water from the path. The antenna foundations can be found a little below.

On January 1, 1975, Donnstetten was incorporated into the new municipality of Römerstein.

Religions

The St. George's Church viewed from the south

In Donnstetten itself there is a Protestant parish, together with Westerheim . St. George's Church was built in the 15th century with a single nave and a small tower choir. In 1447 a parish was founded. Later, in 1828, the church was extended to the south. The neo-Gothic Gruol organ is from 1844. There is also a late-Gothic crucifix. The wrought iron altar grille comes from the baroque era. The cemetery used to be in the parish garden between St. George's Church and the parish barn. However, the Thirty Years' War made it too small and moved it to the western edge of Donnstetten.

The members of the Evangelical Methodist Church meet in Laichingen, while the Catholics are assigned to the parish of St. Josef in Bad Urach.
