The Swabian Alb Cycle Path runs over 320 kilometers as a long -distance cycle path from Lake Constance via the Swabian Alb to Nördlingen . During its course, the Swabian Alb cycle path overcomes 4004 meters uphill and 3971 meters downhill.
The cycle path is usually shown on maps with the abbreviation SA .
particularities
Overall, the Swabian Alb Geopark is comprehensible in its variety of natural phenomena on the Swabian Alb Cycle Path : famous fossils, interesting outcrops , extinct volcanic chimneys and free-standing witness mountains shape the picture. The southwest German stepland shows itself with meteorite impacts and other geological features on its entire route.
Even the start of the path at Überlinger See impresses with the steep bank walls that were created by a rift fracture as a result of the folding of the Alps . During the Ice Age , the lake was shaped by the Rhine glacier coming from the southeast, which gouged out the whole of Lake Constance. The path leaves the Lake Constance region and then leads directly to the Obere Donau Nature Park with its Danube breakthrough .
One of the demanding sides of the path is the repeated crossing of the European main watershed . Shortly after Trochtelfingen , where the ascent from the tributaries of the Danube and the descent over the Neckar tributaries through the high-lying watershed Atlantic - Black Sea , this divide can be experienced in a special way.
At Bad Urach the path reaches the Swabian Alb biosphere area and leaves it again along with the Alb-Neckar cycle path through the Neidlinger Valley . In between, the cycle path runs at over 800 meters above sea level.
Holzmaden stands for fossils from the Posidonia schist formation , which can be experienced both in nature and in the Hauff Urwelt Museum .
At the destination, the traces of the Ries event are visible in the form of the meteorite crater in the Nördlinger Ries .
Sights along the route
The Sigmaringen Castle is reached on the Danube. North of the Danube, the low mountain range character of the Swabian Alb comes into play.
The mighty Hohenurach Castle is visible in the Ermstal; at the same time the Swabian Alb biosphere area is reached.
A view from Limburg towards the Alb, where the path loses a considerable amount of height. Limburg is bypassed at the end of the Neidlinger valley.
The Three Kaiser Mountains can be experienced between Göppingen and Schwäbisch Gmünd .
One of the last cultural monuments between Aalen and Nördlingen on the eaves of the Ostalb , visible from afar, is Kapfenburg Castle .
