geography

course

Dorfbach im Bachtobel

The village stream rises at 638  m above sea level. M. in the Chridler corridor between Aesch and Scheuren (Forch). Initially, the stream flows northwest in a depression between the old people's home and Tägern through the Trinertobel , where it is accompanied by a forest edge. Shortly thereafter, it takes up a left branch and turns to the northeast. It crosses under a little road and a little later reaches the wooded area, where it picks up the Aescherbach coming from the Wassberg from the left .

The Dorfbach now enters the Bachtobel , a geomorphological landscape protection object. In the steeply sloping terrain, it overflows a forest path. The heavily built-up stream passes a four and a half meter and a four meter high waterfall in quick succession. After overcoming a twelve meter and a six meter high waterfall, the Tüfmoosbach and the Granglenbach flow right next to each other from the right and a left branch. The ravine now widens a little and reaches a depth of around 30 meters before it flattens out again before the upper edge of the village of Maur.

On the south-western edge of the village of Maur, directly before the confluence of the Haumesserbach from the left, part of its water is diverted to feed the small mill pond at the Maur mill . Shortly afterwards, this water flows back into the stream in two inlets. He passes Maur Castle in the edge of a forest . In the center of Maur he is overtaken briefly behind the old schoolhouse; directly below the Fällanden - Uessikon road , it again runs above ground. The Dorfbach now flows through a briefly built-up area in the Unterdorf before it crosses the fields between Geren and Seewisen accompanied by a forest border . Finally it flows into the lido at 435  m above sea level. M. to the south bank of the Greifensee.

Catchment area

Most of the 1.8 square kilometer catchment area is in the municipality of Maur, only small parts of the Wassberg belong to Küsnacht and Zumikon . It consists of 56.4% built-up area, 24.2% near-natural area and forest, and 19.4% agricultural area.

The highest point is 737  m above sea level. M. am Wassberg above the military man monument near Rüteli in the municipality of Zumikon. The average altitude is 610  m above sea level. M.

In the north is the catchment area of the Dattenbach , in the south that of the Chilenbach and Islenbach , which, apart from the latter, flow into the Greifensee at a distance of a few hundred meters. In the northwest the catchment area borders on that of the Werenbach and in the west on that of the Küsnachter Dorfbach , both of which drain to Lake Zurich .

history

Mills and sawmills

Mill Maur
«Sagi»

In the Middle Ages, there were two mills on the Dorfbach in Maur that had to pay interest to the local Meier . Since 1306 the "lower mill" belonged to the Fraumünster Abbey . It was last mentioned in writing in 1769.

In 1701 the Maur mill, as it has been preserved to this day, was rebuilt as a stone structure. In 1822 the mill wing was rebuilt. In 1900 the mill stopped operating and twelve years later the water wheel was broken off. The mill was to be demolished later, but could be preserved as a cultural asset at the last second, whereby the municipality acquired the building. In 1988 the restored building was inaugurated. In addition to the milling industry, an exhibition also shows local cultural assets such as agricultural equipment and household items.

The adjacent "Sagi" was first mentioned in 1569. The construction dates back to 1778. In the 1920s, it was switched to electrical operation and then the supply line was broken off. Like the mill, the sawmill became the property of the municipality in 1971 and was restored in the following years.

From 1848 to 1874 there was also a mill in Aesch am Eggenberg .

Flood

The storm of July 8, 1778 led to flooding in Maur as well. There were two fatalities, the Sagi , the wheel house of the upper mill and probably the lower mill were destroyed.
