The village church Dambeck is a Romanesque stone church in the Salzwedel district of Dambeck in the north-west of Saxony-Anhalt . It has largely been preserved in its original form.

history

The church was built in the second half of the 12th century. The village of Dambeck is located in the Altmark , where acts of war often took place at that time. The function of the church as a fortified church is controversial. The Church has seen few changes during its existence. The arched, coupled sound openings on the tower and the window openings in the nave are still preserved in their original form. In the 16th century a small half-timbered porch was added to the choir .

The later Bishop Ludolf Hermann Müller worked as a pastor at the Dambeck Church from 1908 to 1917. Today the church belongs to the parish of Apenburg in the parish of Salzwedel of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany . In 2011 the outside of the church was renovated. The interior will also be repaired from 2018.

Location, architecture and equipment

Dambeck Church from the northeast

The Dambeck church is located in the middle of the village Dambeck about 50 meters south of the village street. The church was built as a Romanesque, four-part complex with - from west to east - a transverse rectangular tower, nave , choir and apse , while most of the other stone churches of the diocese of Verden at that time were built in three or one part. The tower is around 15 meters high. The ceiling in the interior of the church is a straight wooden beam ceiling.

In the church there is a carved altar from the end of the 15th century. Its central shrine depicts a crescent moon Madonna in a halo together with Ursula and Katharina . The twelve apostles are depicted in the two wings. A detailed carved baptismal angel hangs from the ceiling of the choir room . The wooden pulpit dates from the second half of the 17th century. There are six baroque tombstones in the floor and two wooden epitaphs hang on one wall . The walls are whitewashed. On the organ gallery there is a lead-glazed window with a coat of arms from 1863. The old main portal is made of oak and can no longer be opened from the outside.

use

The Dambeck cemetery is located to the north and south of the church. A gravestone commemorates nine former inmates of the Salzwedel subcamp of the Neuengamme concentration camp , who were buried there.
