The church belongs to the parish office Osternienburg in the parish of Köthen of the Evangelical Church of Anhalt .

location

The church in the center of Elsnigk is on the corner of Elsnigker Bahnhofsstraße and Osternienburger Straße . To the south of it is the Völkerschlachtdenkmal , to the southwest the fire brigade and on the north side the war memorial .

history

In Elsnigk, which can be verified for the first time in 1349, a church is mentioned as early as 1370. In the 19th century, a new building was necessary, which was implemented between 1877 and 1879. The consecration of this church, which still exists today, took place on July 20, 1879.

shape

The church was built as a neo-Romanesque hall building with a west tower and east apse . The sacred building also shows elements from other epochs, which is particularly evident in the two stepped gables , which in this form were rather untypical for the Romanesque period . The same can be said - in the area of village church building - of the dimensions of the windows, which were much smaller in the Romanesque era. Numerous details determine the exterior of the church, including pinnacles on the corners of the ship, ox eyes , cornices , clocks and friezes on the tower, pillars in the sound openings of the tower or even gradations of the window openings.

During the First World War , the copper covering of the brick spire was given in 1916 as part of the metal donation of the German people . Exactly 100 years later, safety measures were taken on the tower and the gables. In the church there is the picture cycle Lives in Love by the Koethen painter Steffen Rogge.
