Königsmark village church

The Protestant village church of Königsmark is a late Romanesque brick church in the Königsmark district of Osterburg (Altmark) in the Stendal district in Saxony-Anhalt . It belongs to the parish of Königsmark in the Stendal parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

History and architecture

The village church in Königsmark is a brick building from the third quarter of the 12th century (according to another source from the first quarter of the 13th century), originally like the village church Schönhausen (Elbe) as a three-aisled basilica of five axes with west transverse tower, rectangular choir and semicircular apse was built. The side aisles were dismantled in the 17th century. Its width can be reconstructed from the remains of the foundation walls; the roof approach is still recognizable. In 1964 the structure was restored.

The preserved parts, like other neighboring village churches (such as the village churches Schönhausen , Redekin , Melkow and Großwulkow ) show the influence of the Jerichow monastery and are carefully executed. On the top of the nave, the arcade bays can be seen on the outside through pilaster strips . The conclusion is formed by a console frieze and on the north and south sides of the choir by a wide frieze of intersecting triangles. The arched windows in the nave and choir have been preserved, the windows in the apse have been changed in Baroque style. The stepped southern choir portal is designed with an inlaid round bead and sits in a rectangular wall projection. The transverse rectangular west tower can be recognized by construction joints as a Gothic addition. When it was added, the lower parts of the former west facade were partially preserved. In contrast to the Schönhausen village church, it is only slightly wider than the central nave and is not divided up to the bell storey. The bell storey shows coupled sound openings and is closed off with a gable roof over gables with diaphragms.

The flat-roofed interior is characterized by the pillars with half-columns and cube capitals that support the truss arch . The arcade pillars with semicircular columns and cube capitals are structured in a similar way. In the walling of the arcades, there are sometimes richly profiled fighters . The interior was restored in 1984, with a winter church installed under the west gallery.

Furnishing

A two-story baroque altarpiece with paintings of the Last Supper and the Resurrection of Jesus Christ , flanked by thin spiral columns on the sides, is dated to 1669 and was restored in 1964. It shows a stylistic relationship with the reredos in the church of Erxleben . The tendrils of the cheeks and the crown were renewed during a restoration in 1900.

The pulpit is a Renaissance work from 1596 with pilasters and heraldic reliefs in aedicules . In the apse windows three coats of arms from 1665 have been preserved. There are also inscription tombstones in the apse for the pastors Wilhelm Pontanus († 1600), Daniel Heinemann († 1606), Joachim Moldenhauer († 1677), Johannes Moldenhauer († 1711) and a children's tombstone for Regina Dorothea Moldenhauer († 1689). The organ is a work that was donated in 1864.
