Dorothea Charol

Dorothea Charol (* 21st February 1889 in Odessa , Russian Empire ; † 16th March 1963 in London , United Kingdom ) was a German sculptor of Art Deco .

Life

Charol studied in Dresden at the Richter Art School with Arthur Lange , in Brussels at the University, in Munich in Studio Schwägerle and in Italy . She worked in Berlin , among other places .

From 1916 she found artistic recognition in the Munich Secession and in other exhibitions such as the December exhibition of the New Museum (Berlin) in 1916. She made portrait busts as well as life-size nudes and figures and worked as a designer for figural porcelain. In the 1920s, Charol created models as a freelancer for numerous porcelain factories, including the Aelteste Volkstedter Porcelain Manufactory and the Unterweißbacher Porcelain Art Workshops . She designed exotic dancers based on the stories in A Thousand and One Nights for the Rosenthal porcelain factory . Some of her bronze and ivory works were handcrafted by the Berlin company Rosenthal & Maeder (from 1929 after the takeover of Preiss & Kassler ).

Charol and her husband, the painter Adolf Köglsperger , belonged to the artists' association The Abstracts .

reception

The magazine Beaux Arts du Monde described Charol as "top class porcelain modeler". After Malcolm Haslam some of their works show in the style of Art Deco , the "filthy, obscene" ( English smutty ) side of the Berlin of the 1920s; Karl Eric Toepfer goes so far as to call her dancer figures “unnaturally erotic” ( perversely erotic ).
