Double Platinum - Double Platinum! is an American musical film from 1999 with the singers Diana Ross and Brandy in the lead roles.

action

Soul star Olivia King leaves her daughter Kayla, a baby at the time, to pursue a career as a singer.

Eighteen years later, Kayla attends Olivia’s concert without knowing that this is the teenager’s mother. Olivia tells Kayla that she is her daughter. But the easily irritable Kayla, who dreams of a career herself, reacts to the returning mother with anger and rejection. After all, Kayla can't understand why she was left alone as a baby. Olivia's offer to help the talented girl with her contacts in the music industry is accepted, but the mother has to come to terms with the fact that she has no chance of establishing a parental relationship with her embittered daughter. Olivia reluctantly accepts this fact while Kayla, secretly longing for her mother, tries to preserve her hard shell.

Olivia invites Kayla to live with her in New York City in her chic penthouse apartment and a chauffeur. And there, too, Kayla decides to become a superstar, just like her mother. She quickly gets a record deal. Then she enters into a liaison with the music producer Ric Ortega.

But further conflicts arise at the Grammy Awards when her label decides to let Kayla's mother Olivia sing. This makes Kayla feel like she is being neglected and she gets mad. When she also learns that her boyfriend Ortega has told the press that Oliva is Kayla's mother, she leaves her boyfriend. Ultimately, Kayla changes her mind about her mother and the two make up.

Reviews

“A sentimental story that unites the singing stars Diana Ross and Brandy and thus brings two generations of singing together. Even if the story is developed quite stereotypically, the two main actresses and the soul songs they perform are convincing. "

“As an up-and-coming singer, young Kayla wins an evening with world star Olivia King. But when Olivia reveals to her that she is her mother, a world collapses for Kayla. A difficult path begins for them. For fans of Diana Ross and Brandy, this TV melodrama is sure to be a treat. "
