The 35 meter high Baroque Trinity Column ( tschech. Sloup Nejsvětější Trojice ) was from 1716 to 1754 in the Moravian town of Olomouc built as much for the extinction of the plague of 1716. In 2000, the column under the reference number 859 in which was UNESCO - World List of Cultural and Natural Heritage of Humanity added.

history

The plan for the erection of a plague column on the Upper Square in Olomouc, the construction of which began in 1716, goes back to the stonemason Wenzel Render . After his death, the work of Franz Thoneck, Johann Wenzel Rokický and Augustin Scholtz was continued.

The sculpting work was carried out first by Phillip Sattler and then, after his death, by Andreas Zahner. The gold-plated group of figures of the Trinity on top of the column was created by the goldsmith Simon Forstner. Thus only Olomouc artists were involved in the construction of the column.

The solemn consecration of the column, in which the Bohemian Queen Maria Theresa and her husband Francis I Stephan of Lorraine took part, took place on September 9, 1754.

In 1758, during the siege of the city by the Prussians , the Trinity Column was damaged by artillery fire. The golden replica of a cannonball in the upper part of the column reminds of this today.

architecture

The Trinity Column was erected at three levels on a circular plateau with a diameter of about 15 meters. The column is adorned with reliefs of the 12 apostles and the theological virtues and 18 larger-than-life figures of saints, including John Nepomuk , Adalbert of Prague and Wenceslaus of Bohemia, and the Slav apostles Cyril and Method , who are particularly venerated in the Czech Republic .

On the top of the column there is a gilded representation of the Trinity and below it the Archangel Michael . Another gilded group of figures on the front of the column represents the Assumption of the Virgin .

According to the reason given by UNESCO for the award of the World Heritage title, the plague column is one of the most extraordinary examples of the climax of the Central European Baroque in the form of the "Olomouc Baroque".
