The threefold pinellia ( Pinellia ternata (Thunb.) Makino , Syn .: Arum ternatum Thunb. , Pinellia tuberifera Ten. ) Is a species of the genus Pinellia ( Pinellia ) in the Arum family (Araceae).

features

The threefold pinellia is a spring green, perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 20 to 30 centimeters. It forms spherical bulbs as persistence organs, which have a diameter of about 12 mm. Nodules are formed in the leaf axils. The two to five stalked leaves are three-part and 5 to 6, rarely up to 12 centimeters long. The petiole is 15 to 20 cm long. The middle leaflet is oblong-lanceolate.

It is single sexed ( monoecious ). The inflorescences typical of the Araceae family are formed. The inflorescence stem is 25 to 35 cm long. The flask is divided into a male, sterile and female section. The green to whitish-green and violet at the edge spatha is above the rest of the female, 2 cm long portion of the inflorescence inwardly constricted, green outside and inside dark purple. The spathe is 5 to 7 centimeters long, blunt and its cauldron is closed at the bottom. The sterile part of the flask is 3 mm long. The male section is 5 to 7 mm long. The piston process is much thicker than the spathe and has a diameter of 3 millimeters at the base.

The flowering period extends from May to July. The pollination is carried by midges .

Solitary, egg-shaped, yellowish green berries are formed.

The chromosome number is 2n = 42, 54, 72, 78, 90, 91, 99, 104, 108 or 117.

Occurrence

The threefold pinellia is native to most of China , southern and central Japan , the Nansei Islands, Taiwan and Korea. The habitats are mainly fallow land , secondary forests , fields and grassy slopes rich in herbs at altitudes below 2500 meters. This species is feral in western Germany and other areas around the world.

use

The threefold pinellia is rarely used as an ornamental plant in perennial beds on paths and is considered a plant for lovers.

Although the raw tuber is poisonous, it is used as food. The poison is destroyed by drying and thorough cooking. This species is grown all over Japan to obtain the tubers.

Medical effects are known. This is why this species is grown in China. The Chinese name for the drug is Ban Xia.
