History and locations

Before 1945

Before 1945 there were numerous chocolate and confectionery manufacturers in Dresden, u. a. the companies Hartwig & Vogel , Gerling & Rockstroh (GERO) and Dr. med. Sperber chocolate and nutrient factory GmbH . At the beginning of the 20th century, 7,000 people were employed in Dresden's confectionery factories.

After the Second World War

On July 1, 1948, Hartwig & Vogel AG was expropriated on the orders of SMAD . A little later, Gerling & Rockstroh, which had already been expropriated in 1946, was deleted from the commercial register. Together with the company Dr. med. Sperber and the Kosa chocolate factory Rolle K.-G. In Niederoderwitz these companies were combined to form the VEB Dresden Chocolate and Confectionery Industry. The headquarters were on the former premises of Hartwig & Vogel at Rosenstrasse 32, Ammonstrasse 86 and Freiberger Strasse 25-29 (Plant I, also Plant "Tell" or VEB Tell). There were branches at Frankenbergstrasse 25 (Plant II, formerly Gerling & Rockstroh, also Plant “Gero”) and in Niederoderwitz (Plant III). From January 1, 1952, the company belonged to the VVB of the confectionery industry with a total of 15 plants in Saxony, Brandenburg and Thuringia. At that time, the company had a total of 1,400 employees.

Various chocolate and sugar confectionery products were produced. a. Chocolate, chocolate shells , chocolates , candies and dragees . These were sold under the brand names "Dresdner Kokettchen", "Elbflorenz", "Florenz", "Floretta", "Premiere", "Tell" and the like. a. sold. In 1953, VEB Dresdner Süßwarenfabriken Elbflorenz took over the cocoa, chocolate and sugar confectionery factory J. G. Kynast (Zwickauer Straße 72/74). After applying for a patent for the continuous production of marzipan and persipan raw mass at the end of the 1960s, the VEB confectionery factories "Elbflorenz" developed within the VVB into a company in which new techniques and technologies were tried out and further developed. Close cooperation there was also the section processing - and process engineering of the Technical University of Dresden and the packaging machinery manufacturer NAGEMA .

After 1972

With the expropriation of the last remaining private companies in the GDR in 1972, the Riedel & Engelmann company was added and incorporated into the company as VEB Schwerter Süßwaren , as was the Radebeul-based chocolate manufacturer Nudossi . In the course of these mergers, the production program was restructured. The praline production was discontinued and the production of chocolate bases , fondant mass, whole milk powder and other cocoa products was expanded instead . In 1984 various chocolates, marzipan items , cocoa and sugar sprinkles, gelatine products , nudossi , raw masses, hard fat glazes and fondant masses were produced. Until 1989, marzipan potatoes were also produced for the Cologne-based company Hitschler International GmbH & Co. KG . From 1980 to 1990 the VEB Dresdner Confectionery Factory "Elbflorenz" belonged to the Delitzsch Confectionery Combine.

Some sweets of the trading companies Genex , Intershop or Delikat were not made in the FRG, but as contract production in the GDR by Dresden confectionery factories Elbflorenz (e.g. Lübeck marzipan bread ). The designation of origin was not “ Made in West Germany ” but “ Made in Germany ”.

After 1989

With the political changes in the GDR , attempts were made to restructure the VEB Dresdner confectionery factories "Elbflorenz" and to sell it to a West German company. However, since they showed no interest and the descendants of the previous owners also refused to take over, production in the Dresden factories I and II was stopped in early 1990. The parts of the business in Schwerter and Vadossi were transferred back to the former owners who had been expropriated in 1972. The company property went to a newly formed Elbflorenz property company, which was to exploit it. In 1991 the buildings at the headquarters were demolished in favor of the Dresden World Trade Center, which was built in 1991 .

Today Elbflorenz is one of the brands of Saxon and Dresden bakery and confectionery (formerly Vadossi) in Radebeul , which sells chocolate, wafer and wafer products.
