Newbridge (the Irish and official name is: Droichead Nua ) is a town in County Kildare in the east of the Republic of Ireland .
The place
Newbridge, officially (An) Droichead Nua since the 1930s , but only in its English-speaking form in everyday language, is located on the banks of the Liffey and with 10,125 inhabitants in the 2011 Census - after Naas , the administrative seat of the county - the second largest Town in County Kildare; it is one of the twenty largest cities in the Republic of Ireland.
The city's origins go back to the 12th century; it was formed from six historical parishes and other areas and has a rich history of early Christian settlement.
Today Newbridge is, also due to its favorable location about 40 km southwest of Dublin on two national roads, a flourishing industrial and commercial city with a growing population. Pharmaceutical companies such as Wyeth and Oral-B have set up shop here alongside long-established industries. There is a city partnership with Bad Lippspringe and Ocala , Florida .
Transport links
Newbridge is on a bypass of the M7 / N7 from Dublin on the east coast to Limerick Town in the south west of the country; further west of Newbridge the N9 via Carlow Town and Kilkenny to Waterford from the M7.
With Iarnród Éireann , Newbridge is connected to the nationwide passenger rail service via Intercity ; The city also belongs to the South Western Commuter System of Iarnród Éireann and is served several times a day by Bus Éireann and other bus companies.
Sports
Newbridge is u. a. the home of the football club Kildare County FC in Curragh , between Newbridge and Kildare Town , is the most famous racecourse and the venue of the five most important horse races in Ireland.
