The Drone Champions League ( DCL ) is a racing series in the international FPV racing sport and was launched in 2016 by Herbert Weirather in the Principality of Liechtenstein . The quadrocopters , also known as race drones, are steered through a three-dimensional race track with first-person-view goggles at speeds of up to 160 km / h .

history

In 2016 Herbert Weirather founded Drone Champions AG, which acts as the organizer of the Drone Champions League (DCL), together with the sports marketing agency WWP (Weirather, Wenzel & Partner). Weirather himself previously worked as a race engineer with aerobatic pilot Hannes Arch and was himself an aerobatic pilot. Since the founding of DCL, the entrepreneur has had the vision of "enabling everyone to have the dream of flying" in the foreground.

DCL's main sponsors and partners include WWP (Weirather - Wenzel & Partner), Red Bull , Seat , McDonald’s , Breitling and Tencent .

The DCL finished its third season in October 2018 and will start its fourth season in May 2019 with the Drone Prix Laax ( Laax , Switzerland ) on the Crap Sogn Gion .

Regulations and race format

At the DCL, four pilots compete against each other in the form of teams. Each Drone Prix starts with the qualification laps, in which the racing times of the individual drivers are counted. The sum of these times gives an overall result for each team. After a comparison, the teams that meet in the final rounds are determined with the help of the qualification times.

In the quarter-finals as well as in the semi-finals and finals, two teams compete against each other and have to complete five so-called "heats", which usually consist of three rounds. There are four rounds in the “Single Heats”, with a pilot from Team A competing against a pilot from Team B - the winner gets one point for his team. In the “Big Heat” that follows, all eight drones are in the air - the first pilot at the finish (Crashgate) receives the “Big Heat” point for his team. Bonus points can be achieved by having two, three or four pilots from the same team land in consecutive positions.

DCL season 2017

After the debut in August and November 2016 in Reutte ( Tyrol , Austria ) and Salina Turda ( Romania ), the DCL started the first official season in June 2017 with the opening race on the Champs-Élysées in Paris with 150,000 spectators. The 2017 tour then took the DCL to Vaduz ( Liechtenstein ), where the FL1 Grand Prix was held right in front of the state government building. The third race - Grand Prix Brussels - took place at Mont des Arts (Kunstberg) in Brussels ( Belgium ). The last tour stop before the grand finale was in Salina Turda (Romania) for the second time. The season finale was held in the listed brick hall “Station Berlin” in Berlin ( Germany ), where NEXXBlades Racing from Great Britain emerged as the overall winner.
