Dunaszentmiklós ( German Niklo ) is a municipality in Komárom-Esztergom County in Hungary . It has about 450 inhabitants.
Settlement name
Dunaszentmiklós literally means Saint Nicholas on the Danube . In the Middle Ages there was a church dedicated to St. Nicholas .
history
The place was first mentioned in 1382 as "Zenth Myklos" . The village was destroyed during a Turkish campaign in 1529 and remained uninhabited until the 18th century. Count József Eszterházy settled here in the 1730s Catholics from Westphalia , who built a street village typical of Hungarian Germans. Its traces can still be seen today. The community has had its own self-government since 1990 . The German minority administration has been active in Dunaszentmiklós since 1994 . In 2003 a holiday village was built within the settlement for Dutch tourists. A private swing golf course is operated to support tourism .
