Dust is the third studio album by the US hard rock / thrash metal band Tremonti . The album was released on April 29, 2016 via Fret12.

Emergence

The songs for the album Dust were created at the same time as those for the previous album Cauterize . In total, Mark Tremonti wrote 25 songs, which were reduced to 20 during the studio recording. For the two albums, Mark Tremonti went back to some very old ideas. The chorus of Unable to See was originally written for the first Alter Bridge album, One Day Remains , while the riff that rings in the bridge on the song Catching Fire was written by Mark Tremonti while he was in high school . Both albums were recorded at the same time and produced by Michael Baskette . Initially, the release of a double album was planned, but the band rejected this plan again. Mark Tremonti stated in an interview that a double album would not have given each of these songs the attention it deserves.

Instead, Mark Tremonti decided to release the albums with ten songs each. According to Tremonti, the two albums should be "as versatile and balanced as possible". In addition, the first album should not be stronger than the second. According to Mark Tremonti, it was difficult to hold back some of his favorite songs for a long time until the album Dust was released. As examples, he named the theme song Dust , My Last Mistake , Betray Me or Catching Fire . Originally the songs on the Dust album had a different order. For example, the theme song Dust moved from last to fourth position, while The Cage moved up from seventh or eighth position to number two.

The songs on the Dust album are thematically linked to the songs on the previous album Cauterize . According to Mark Tremonti, the songs on the album Cauterize described a science-fiction- like doomsday scenario . The songs on the album Dust deal with its consequences. According to Mark Tremonti, the shackles on the album cover stand for the earth that has been freed from the impurities but would be in a desolate state.

In the first song My Last Mistake , Mark Tremonti processes experiences from his school days. He would have been the new guy at school more often and more often made friends with the wrong people who later get you into trouble or bring you down. Once Dead is inspired by Mark Lawrence's book, King of Darkness , which is about a necromancer . The song is about the dark side of this person. In The Cage is about a man who was forced by life to his knees. This person rejects advice from other people that might help him. According to Mark Tremonti, the protagonist would be trapped in his self-made cage and victim of his own decisions.

In the theme song Dust , Mark Tremonti reflects the constant ups and downs in his career. He is referring to the bad days, when the people who crowd around him during the good days no longer want to know anything about him. Unable to See is about how music acts as a place of rescue and refuge in Mark Tremonti's life. By his own admission, music would give him energy and make him happy. Mark Tremonti got the inspiration for the song when his backpack with his recording device was stolen from him during a concert in Pennsylvania .

Reviews

According to Matthias Weckmann from the German magazine Metal Hammer , “Metal hearts would beat faster” when Mark Tremonti “starts the riff machine and gallops away like a dervish”. Dust would "pop more" from Cauterize , but it would "have made more sense if the best songs from the sessions had been combined into a consistently glamorous whole". Weckmann awarded five out of seven points. For Thomas Kupfer from the German magazine Rock Hard, the "recipe for success that also distinguishes his two main bands [Alter Bridge and Creed]" counts for Tremonti. Tremonti combine “fat riffs almost playfully with radio-compatible hooks and refrains” and thereby create “an all-round successful modern rock record”, for which Kupfer awarded seven out of ten points.
