A Dying Machine is the fourth studio album of American hard rock / thrash metal - band Tremonti . The album was released on June 8, 2018 via Napalm Records .
Emergence
After the release of the previous album Dust , bassist Wolfgang Van Halen left the band because he was too busy with his main band Van Halen and his solo album. The songwriting for A Dying Machine began around mid-2017, when Mark Tremonti warmed up for the performance before a concert by his main band Alter Bridge in Hungary . He thought of a few chords that would later become the refrain of the title song. In contrast to the previous Tremonti albums, Mark Tremonti only used one song with Desolation that was not used by his main band Alter Bridge. The song Found is an instrumental.
Like the three previous albums, A Dying Machine was produced by Michael Baskette. The bass was played by guitarist Eric Friedman. At the beginning of February 2018, Tremonti signed a new contract with the Austrian record label Napalm Records, to which Mark Tremonti's main band Alter Bridge is already under contract. For the song Take You With Me one was music video rotated. For a long time Mark Tremonti was unsure whether he should use this song on the album at all. However, he was retuned that everyone involved in the production felt that he would be insane if the song were not used. On May 12, 2018 Tremonti played a concert in Orlando for the release of the album. Another music video was released for Throw Them to the Lions in January 2019 .

A Dying Machine is the first concept album in the band's history. The story takes place at the turn of the 21st to the 22nd century and is about artificial life forms called humans and vessels that try to coexist with one another. The Vessels describes Mark Tremonti than in laboratories bred creatures that have largely human body parts. However, they are filled with dates and properties selected by their owners, named primaries .
Over time, some Vessels begin to defy and disregard the orders of the Primaries . A recall leads to a war between Vessels and Primaries . The protagonist of the story is a vessel that was programmed by its owner to love him. The owner wants to get over the death of his wife. The idea for this story came to Mark Tremonti while on tour with his main band Alter Bridge. Mark Tremonti is working with author John Shirley on a book publication.
In the song Traipse , the protagonist of the story finds himself lonely and abandoned on a lonely island and has to face his fears. The song Take You With Me is about how people convince other people that despite their scars and imperfections, they are stronger than they think of themselves.

Reviews
For Ronny Bittner from the German magazine Rock Hard , Mark Tremonti seems to be able to “draw from a never-ending pool of songs”. Even if the music “is implemented very appealingly”, Bittner “now misses new impulses in songwriting”. Bittner awarded 7.5 out of ten points. Katrin Riedl from the German magazine Metal Hammer described the album as "a strong soundtrack for periods of doubt when empires begin to crumble". Even if she remarked that “a few songs less would not have been more effective”, Riedl awarded five out of seven points.
Chart placements
For the first time the band reached a top ten position with rank 3 in the Swiss album charts. A Dying Machine reached 14th place in Austria, 18th in Germany and 19th in the United Kingdom. While Tremonti reached new highs in all these countries, the album only came in 57th in the USA.
