EMF is a British rock and pop - band from Forest of Dean , Gloucestershire .

Band history

The group was founded in the summer of 1989 by five school friends. The band name officially stands for "Epsom Mad Funkers". Their success came much faster than expected: there was not much more than half a year between the band's first appearance in a pub called The Bilson in front of a few hundred guests and the signing of their first record deal . At one of the band's concerts, talent scouts from the music label EMI became aware of the musicians.

In November 1990, the first single Unbelievable was released , a rock track with dance elements, the samples of utterances used by the American comedian Andrew Dice Clay . Within a few weeks, the piece was not only in the top 5 of the charts in the band's home country, but also in other European countries and even made it to number 1 in the charts in the USA . The critically acclaimed debut album Schubert Dip sold two million times . Guitarist Ian Dench explained the title of the album by pointing out that it was the works of Franz Schubert from which he would be happy to “steal” some chords for his own compositions if necessary .

One year after the first long-playing record , the Unexplained EP was released , which was followed by the second studio album Stigma . Despite the positive feedback from music critics, both releases could not match the sales figures of their predecessor. Even with the album Cha Cha Cha , which was released after a three-year break, and the releases , the group did not manage to return to their old successes. EMF achieved better sales in 1995 with a cover version of The Monkees hit I'm a Believer - despite initially skeptical reviews . However, the next single, Afro King , already indicated that the audience's interest in the band had been short-lived. A little later the group broke up.

In 2001 there was a reunion for a concert in London , which resulted in a best-of album. In 2002 bassist Zachary Foley died of a multiple lethal drug overdose (cocaine, heroin, ecstasy, various barbiturates, temazepam and alcohol).

The band's musicians are now devoting themselves to other projects.

Since the middle of 2007 rumors germinated that the band was planning another reunion. At the end of 2008 they appeared as the opening act for the also (part-time) reunited Carter USM at two gigs in Birmingham and Brixton.

In the summer of 2012, the band announced a concert at the Guildhall in Gloucester. On December 15, 2012, the band played their first two albums Schubert Dip and Stigma , as well as the new song Elephant . The result was released on February 28, 2013 as a live DVD.

Since 2016 the band has been playing at various festivals, including a. the Sportbeatsfest in Gloucester in August 2016, different types of Greatest Hits sets.
