history

  • 1973: During the communist rule in Slovakia, Catholics were not allowed to form associations. Nonetheless, in 1973 some activists began organizing youth work activities for children from Christian families. The number of these activists increased steadily until the 1980s and an underground movement emerged. The aim of the movement was to help children develop mature personalities and thereby contribute to the development of the Church and the society in which they live. This educational work was based on Christian ideals.
  • 1989: With the Velvet Revolution in 1989, the freedoms for the people of Slovakia to organize themselves increased. The previously “illegal” Christian underground organizations also began to register and to work freely in public.
  • 1990: After the end of the Cold War it became possible for eRko to officially register with the Slovak Ministry of the Interior as a non-governmental organization .
  • 1995: The Dobrá Novina project (the Slovak equivalent of the German caroling campaign and the Austrian Dreikönigsaktion ) was founded.
  • 1998: eRko becomes an observer member of the international umbrella organization of Catholic youth organizations " Fimcap ".
  • 1999: eRko organized the “Peace for Sudan” campaign. As part of the campaign, more than 10,000 children from Slovakia , Kenya and Austria sent letters appealing for peace to President El-Bashir and rebel leader Garang .
  • 2002: In 2002 eRko sent three volunteers to Nairobi , Kenya . Since then, eRko has gained experience in preparing and sending helpers to the development cooperation locations.
  • 2013: eRko became a member of CIDSE.
  • 2015: eRko hosted the EuroCourse of Fimcap 2015. The title of the course is “Enjoy your freedom!”.
