E Weinan ( Chinese  鄂 维南 , Pinyin È Wéinán ; born September 1963 in Jingjiang , People's Republic of China ) is a Chinese mathematician. As usual in Chinese, the family name E is written first. In the USA he therefore writes to Weinan E.

E Weinan studied mathematics at the Chinese University of Science and Technology in Hefei (pre-diploma 1982) and graduated in 1985 from the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Theory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences . In 1989 he received his doctorate from Björn Engquist at the University of California, Los Angeles ( Homogenization and numerical methods for hyperbolic conservation laws with oscillatory data ). From 1989 to 1992 he was at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University and from 1991 to 1994 at the Institute for Advanced Study . From 1994 he was Associate Professor at the Courant Institute and from 1997 he was a full professor there. He has been a professor at Princeton University since 1999 and has also been a professor at the Beijing International Center for Mathematical Research (BICMR) in Beijing since 2005.

He dealt with various theoretical models for turbulence in hydrodynamics ( Burgers equation ), with numerical hydrodynamics, multiscale methods (development of Heterogeneous Multiscale Methods, HMM) and multiscale modeling, homogenization problems, stochastic partial differential equations, derivation of macroscopic properties from the microscopic electronic structure of solids ( Density functional theory in quantum mechanical many-particle theory and Cauchy-Born rule), modeling of rare events, weak KAM theory. In 1994 he proved part of the Onsager conjecture with Peter Constantin and Edriss Titi (fully proven in 2017 by Philip Isett ).

In 2003 he received the Collatz Prize for his work in many areas of applied mathematics from hydrodynamics to solid state physics, including incompressible flows, turbulence, statistical physics, superconductivity, liquid crystals, polymers, epitaxy, and micromagnetics . In 2009 he received the Ralph E. Kleinman Prize and in 1999 the Feng Kang Prize in Scientific Computing. He became a Fellow of the Institute of Physics in 2005, SIAM in 2009 and a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2011. In 2002 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Beijing (Energy landscapes and rare events, with Weiquing Ren, Eric Vanden-Eijnden). He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society . In 2014 he was awarded the Theodore von Kármán Prize .
