Earl Leaf (* 1905 in Seattle ; † 1980 ) was an American photographer who became known for his star photographs.

Life

Leaf grew up in San Francisco . Before he started working as a photographer, he kept himself afloat with numerous part-time jobs such as cowboy , sailor and harvest worker . As a journalist for the United Press Associations , Leaf went to China in 1936 , took photos and reported on the Second Sino-Japanese War , and managed to interview Mao Zedong . In 1940, Leaf was employed by the Chinese government in New York as an advisor to the Central Publicity Board .

Leaf moved to Hollywood in 1949 and began working as a photographer. His first series of photos with actress Cleo Moore caused a sensation, and Leaf photographed Moore in her own house, barely dressed. This was followed by numerous recordings for rising stars such as Marilyn Monroe , with whom Leaf had a personal friendship, Clint Eastwood and Grace Kelly .

In the early 1950s, Earl was well established in his non-studio style, working with Hollywood celebrities like Humphrey Bogart , Marlon Brando , John Wayne and Frank Sinatra . Numerous photo series with Elvis Presley , Ricky Nelson , Eva Lynd , Natalie Wood , Jayne Mansfield , Debbie Reynolds , Joan Bradshaw and The Beatles followed .

As part of his work for the youth magazine Teen Set , published by Capitol Records , there was a friendly collaboration with the Beach Boys . On the album The Beach Boys Today! an excerpt from an interview between Leaf and the Beach Boys was published under the title Bull Sessions with "Big Daddy" . Leaf passed away in 1980.
