The East Side Mall is a shopping center on the Warschauer Brücke in Berlin-Friedrichshain with a sales area of 25,000 m² on three retail levels as well as a total area of 38,000 m² and 120 retail stores. The mall opened in 2018.
history
The Freo Group GmbH acquired in 2015 the area between the Mercedes-Benz Arena and the Warsaw bridge - to direct losses to exist. Construction work began in May 2016 and opened on October 31, 2018 as the city's 69th shopping center. The Dutch architect Ben van Berkel designed the East Side Mall in the UFO style. The construction costs were estimated at around 200 million euros. In 2019, access from the Warschauer Brücke was permitted, which was previously not permitted due to a lack of safety precautions.
Tenant
In the shopping center you will find the usual chain stores of the retail trade, supermarkets, as well as fast food, banks and telecom providers. In the East Side Mall, an ex-professional from Union Berlin , Benjamin Köhler , runs an ice cream parlor.
Public perception
On Zeit.de a longer report in which the shopping center was called a "place of urban hopelessness" was released at the opening of the mall 2018th In the Berlin city magazine ZITTY a column appeared with the title: "Can it please tear it down again?" The building is a "UFO-style concrete block sealed off from the outside" without a face, in a "clinically dead" area.
