Eberhard Burger , OBE (born July 26, 1943 in Berlin ) is a German civil engineer and has been a former canon in the cathedral chapter at St. Mary's Cathedral in Wurzen since 2018 (canon there from 1986 to 2018). From 1996 to 2005 he was construction director for the reconstruction of the Dresden Frauenkirche and from 2001 to 2007 spokesman for the management of the Frauenkirche Dresden Foundation.

Life

Eberhard Burger was born in July 1943 in Berlin as the fourth child of business graduate Rudolf Burger and his wife Edith . He started school in Halle in 1948 and passed his Abitur in Riesa in 1961 .

Burger had applied for a place at the Faculty of Construction at the Technical University of Dresden in the field of structural engineering . He completed the required practical preparatory study year at the oil processing plant in Schwedt / Oder . In this preparatory year he qualified as a concrete worker . In 1962 he began direct studies at the TU Dresden.

In 1965 he married. A daughter was born that same year and a son in 1968. Burger graduated in 1968 with a degree in engineering . His first employer was the coal and energy construction and assembly company . He took on tasks as construction manager, technical manager and group leader. His first building was the Lubmin nuclear power plant near Greifswald , for which he had to build the construction site equipment. Other structures related to industrial projects in the Dresden district, such as a building for Robotron on Bodenbacher Strasse and the radio and telecommunications technology building on Postplatz .

1980 Eberhard Burger changed to the office of the church building council at the Evangelical Lutheran regional church office of Saxony . In this role he was responsible for the reconstruction of the Dreikönigskirche in Dresden. Until 1991 he was responsible for the entire special and new building program of the Evangelical Church in Saxony, such as the new construction of the Zion Church in Bayreuther Straße or the repair of the tower of Zwickau's St. Mary's Cathedral .

In 1986, Burger took on a new role as canon in the cathedral chapter of Wurzen Cathedral : Under his leadership, Wurzen Cathedral, which was in a desolate state at the time, was completely renovated first from the outside and then also inside. All work was completed in 2004 under his direction.

In 1998 Eberhard Burger was co-founder and initiator of the European Association of Cathedral Builders, Minster Builders and Metalworkers , of which he was chairman until 2005. All major churches in Germany are represented among the current 85 members. In addition, those responsible from Vienna, Basel, Bern, Strasbourg and Prague and specialist representatives from Slovakia, the Netherlands and Norway are members.

In order to take care of the reconstruction of the Frauenkirche in Dresden as construction director , he was given leave of absence on October 1, 1992 from his previous duties (except for the repair of the Wurzen cathedral). In 1995, Burger also became managing director and in 2001 management spokesman for the Frauenkirche Dresden Foundation.

On July 22, 2007, Burger was bid farewell with a service in the Frauenkirche as spokesman for the management of the Frauenkirche Foundation . He was appointed to their board of trustees. He has also been a member of the board of trustees of the International Martin Luther Foundation since 2008 .

Burger is married and has two grown children.

Honors

In 2005 Eberhard Burger received the prize of the ecumenical foundation Bible and Culture for his life's work. On February 10, 2006, Eberhard Burger received an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Dresden. He received an honorary doctorate in engineering (Dr.-Ing. E. h.) “In recognition of his outstanding achievements in the repair and reconstruction of church buildings, in particular in the reconstruction of the Frauenkirche Dresden, as well as in recognition of his support for research projects at the Technical University of Dresden ". Since March 31, 2006 he has been an honorary citizen of the city of Dresden. In 2006 the Association of German Surveying Engineers honored him with the Golden Lot . On 7 September 2007 Burger has been with the Chairman of the Society for the Promotion of reconstruction of the Frauenkirche Dresden, Ludwig Güttler , and the founder of the Frauenkirche Foundation Bernhard Walter , the Federal Cross of Merit awarded. In November 2007, Queen Elizabeth II awarded him the Order of the British Empire (OBE) of the Order of the British Empire for the reconciliation of the two peoples "in recognition of his services to the reconstruction of the Frauenkirche and his significant contribution" awarded.
